Mermaid Week! by tiffanyturrill Mermaid Week! by tiffanyturrill
Just a quick and dirty sketch for Mermaid Week, which was last week? Yeah. Something.

No, they don't look too much like girls with fish butts. I just wanted to play with actually having the creatures look like they're aquatic - which humanoid features are definitely not. I was also toying with different physiological traits and different ecological niches for the "maids."

Have you ever heard of Terryl Whitlatch? She does creature art for movies like Star Wars. Your style reminds me a lot of hers

To me they look more like part-bird part-fish than part-human part-fish.

Humanoid physiology is quite aquatic, actually. Humans only think of ourselves as terrestrial because we're more apt to terrestrial environments; that is not to say we aren't capable of being semi-aquatic. We possess adaptations quite unique to those of other apes. We have less fur and more natural body fat, making us more capable and durable swimmers (think of the difference between pinnipeds and other caniformes; which is essentially the same principle on a larger taxonomic scale). Unlike other apes, we have downward-facing nostrils that render us able to swim in a forward motion without water jetting into our nose; additionally humans have special muscles that enable us to actually seal our nasal canal (this capability is quite rudimentary, but it's there--I use it when swimming all the time). If we developed ourselves in such a direction, humans would be semi-aquatic proper because we are entirely capable of it.

Thought I'd input that.

Oh that's good to know. I now know that my aquatic humanoid aliens aren't as far-fetched as I thought.

Awww, these are really adorable..!
I'd be interested in seeing how they manipulate things, since I suppose the mermaid aspect comes from their level of intelligence and manipulatory limbs? (I can see small fingers on the tips of their fins, actually)

I really like this piece, it intrigued me when I logged on and saw it!

I also love the concepts you've talked about in the description: I think playing about with that would be a really cool idea, especially for developing a story or something. Fun and sciencey at the same time.

Just out of curiosity, how long have you been drawing for? :)
