Dolphins of Japan by tiffanyturrill Dolphins of Japan by tiffanyturrill
The dolphin killing season started a month ago in The Cove of Taiji, but so far no killings have taken place - until a few days ago.

15 Risso's dolphins were herded and slaughtered, and will be cut up and sent throughout Japan to be eaten. Their bodies are likely loaded with mercury, too.

I did this piece after reading about it. These are all of the species of dolphins of Japan, and one porpoise.
(just because Dall's are the one porpoise that think they're dolphins- hyperactive cuties!)

And if you don't know what I'm talking about, go see this movie:

[link]

Aside from the rather depressing news, I really enjoyed doing this piece - Cetaceans were my thing for a long time, it's been years since I drew some and took it to finish. I was mostly able to remember all the scientific names from memory, too. neeeeerd! :P

I like how you put the link into the movie - but some of the information there is misleading. Especially the fact that North American parks obtain their dolphins from these situations.

I sure would like to see some more cetacean art from you; there needs to be more really good cetacean artists on DA. Perhaps you could find some of those old pieces and scan them in. I, too, am a cetacean and marine life artist, and I specialize in drawing and painting sperm whales.

I also wish you had provided a way to view a larger/expanded size (whatever they call it on DA), because it's difficult to read the species and scientific names on some of them when they are printed against the lighter and whiter backgrounds/areas of the image; at least at this resolution.

What happens to these gorgeous animals is horrid. It really is. The image is extremely beautiful! I'm ashamed of Japan for letting this happen, as my grandmother is fully Japanese, and I'm quarter. Nothing makes me more sick than the way these animals are disgustingly slaughtered. Those fishermen need to be accounted for in murder, not only to the Dolphins, but to their own people as well.

If I could, I'd steal those Dolphins and Whales from disgusting places like Sea World and give them a real home, where they can be who they're meant to be. Who they are. :( Goddamn Sea World and it's Blood Dolphin trade.... Have you seen Blood Dolphins? It was a short series that premiered on Animal Planet with Ric O'Berry, I never got to watch it. It's infuriating to see what happens to these animals.

Very nicely done! The angle is, in my humble opinion, that was gives the drawing it`s special touch. The colouration of the dolphins is also good and the angle of the fat porpoise at the top right looks downright great. I imagine it is hard to draw a dolphin aslant.

I also hope that this dolphin massacre will be ended soon.....

While the overall message of The Cove is a good one, it is filled with flawed information about where these dolphins end up. It antagonizes North American parks for obtaining these dolphins, except not a single North American park has a dolphin from these drives.

hehe the short finned pilot whale makes me giggle.

I saw The Cove for my English Comp class and it made me sad. If dolphin meat wasn't loaded with Mercury and they were only being killed for consumption (necessary for survival) I wouldn't have been so upset since we slaughter cattle, chickens, pigs, etc for food... (it all saddens me anyway) but it's not the same so I feel like I have a right to defend our "killing method" and hate theirs.

I don't know... even if my theory isn't right I still see dolphins as beautiful creatures that should be free. They're not eating all of our fish... we're eating theirs.

Beautiful picture.. I remember looking at old slaughter photos from National Geographic Magazine when I was a little kid. It was so sad to see all these dolphins dying on the shore. The amount of blood always haunted my memory... :(

I find it hard to believe that the short finned pilot whale actually has those fins.

The Japanese government should treasure the variety of dolphins Japan have, rather than kill them. The Japanese government surely lacks compassion, let alone brains. :X

Japan is slaughtering a lot of Dalls porpoises each year so I think it was fitting, that you included them into your painting. I love how you did the routh toothed, Dalls porpoise, pilot and false killer whale. The striped and pantropical dolphins also came out so nice!
But the northern rhight whale dolphin looks totally different in my opinion and the bottlenosed could be a bit better. But all in all I love this painting! Especially the colors and shading and how you gathered all these dolphins up in a group. They look so lively and active, that one cannot even imagine that some people still slaughter them. You managed to express all their happiness, friendly nature, elegance and joy of life in this picture.

Aww.. dolphins!
My roommate is Japanese and we got in a fight about this. She was like - What gives us the right to choose to eat one animal over another! I was like - killing one dolphin is the equivalent of killing tons of other, lesser, more sustainable fish.

Luckily today's generation of people don't have any real custom of eating dolphin and whale meat. It's the people over 50 who used to eat it as kids and still hunger for it now. But nowadays most people would rather just have chicken.

i know. the old guard of Japanese culture is still a very proud one, but unfortunately their obstinance comes at the price of their health, and that of their children's. they relabel the dolphin meat as whale, and make it mandatory for country school children. and theyre surprised why they all have mercury poisoning and resulting neurological disorders. :-/

i;m definitely glad the Cove movie is getting such a reception with the younger folks in japan, though. maybe there's still time.

Actually I'd never heard of the Cove movie before I saw your links.. I think it's a natural thing - people don't want to eat dolphins nowadays!! It's the government that's more of a problem.
