The dolphin killing season started a month ago in The Cove of Taiji, but so far no killings have taken place - until a few days ago.

15 Risso's dolphins were herded and slaughtered, and will be cut up and sent throughout Japan to be eaten. Their bodies are likely loaded with mercury, too.

I did this piece after reading about it. These are all of the species of dolphins of Japan, and one porpoise.
(just because Dall's are the one porpoise that think they're dolphins- hyperactive cuties!)

And if you don't know what I'm talking about, go see this movie:

Aside from the rather depressing news, I really enjoyed doing this piece - Cetaceans were my thing for a long time, it's been years since I drew some and took it to finish. I was mostly able to remember all the scientific names from memory, too. neeeeerd! :P

I like how you put the link into the movie - but some of the information there is misleading. Especially the fact that North American parks obtain their dolphins from these situations.

I sure would like to see some more cetacean art from you; there needs to be more really good cetacean artists on DA. Perhaps you could find some of those old pieces and scan them in. I, too, am a cetacean and marine life artist, and I specialize in drawing and painting sperm whales.

I also wish you had provided a way to view a larger/expanded size (whatever they call it on DA), because it's difficult to read the species and scientific names on some of them when they are printed against the lighter and whiter backgrounds/areas of the image; at least at this resolution.

What happens to these gorgeous animals is horrid. It really is. The image is extremely beautiful! I'm ashamed of Japan for letting this happen, as my grandmother is fully Japanese, and I'm quarter. Nothing makes me more sick than the way these animals are disgustingly slaughtered. Those fishermen need to be accounted for in murder, not only to the Dolphins, but to their own people as well.

If I could, I'd steal those Dolphins and Whales from disgusting places like Sea World and give them a real home, where they can be who they're meant to be. Who they are. :( Goddamn Sea World and it's Blood Dolphin trade.... Have you seen Blood Dolphins? It was a short series that premiered on Animal Planet with Ric O'Berry, I never got to watch it. It's infuriating to see what happens to these animals.
